Weight loss. The term weight loss refers to a reduction in body mass which makes the total mass of the body less than what it was previously.

This can be because due to fat, muscle or fluid being lost. In some cases weight can be lost without a person actually trying to lose any weight, perhaps because they are malnourished. Sometimes people do try to lose weight because they want to feel healthier and look better. Cachexia is the term that is used to describe weight loss that is unexplained and it can be an indication that there is a more serious underlying health issue. If a person has lost 5% of their weight in a month without reducing their calorie intake then this is considered a medical program. If a person is reducing the number of calories that they consume each day in order to lose weight then this is usually described as slimming.
